"Good Hair"

If you guys haven’t heard, there is a new movie/documentary out by Chris Rock where the main focus is …get this…black hair!!

He says the inspiration and impetus for him to make this movie stemmed from the fact that his young daughter asked him one day, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?”

Here is a description of the movie taken from the Sundance Festival 2009 website:

When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head! Director Jeff Stilson’s camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture. An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter’s question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn’t always benefit the black community and little Lola’s question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.”

Youcan also see the trailer to this movie HERE.

As a person who has recently become natural, I really can’t wait to see this movie. It seems that black hair issues are coming more and more to the forefront of national discussion. What a great thing.

What do you guys think about Chris Rock’s new venture??

Well I'm glad he ventured to make a movie like this on such a delicate issue. I also shared this trailer with my friends on facebook and loads of people commented that this movie is going to have an eye opening effect on the black community and the world at large too. Hopefully loads of people will walk away from seeing this movie looking at black hair and its versatility as beautiful rather than being a burden or a curse.
so I say bravo to Chris Rock and I cannot wait to see the movie.
NATURAL BEAUTIFUL AFRO HAIR ROCKS!!! ^_^

I heard about this a few days ago and I am DEFINETELY planning to see it! Even though he's a comedian by trade, I hope that he did delve into the very serious issues we black women face when it comes to our hair. There are lots of things he could make fun of but I do hope he used it as an opportunity to really educate and enlighten.
