Hey chicas!
One of the first things I noticed when I started to move towards buying more all natural products for my hair, was that they were usually at least 3 times more expensive than the products I was used to using with my relaxed hair. I don’t know about you, but I’m a grad student (which equals being poor, lol) so I started searching for healthy, natural products that were more in my price range.
This is when I realized that there were plenty of other natural chicas out there who make some of their own products for their hair! I’ve seen things like apple cider vinegar (ACV) as shampoo, baking soda conditioners and even a banana-based deep conditioning mask! From what I hear, people have been getting great results with their homemade concoctions, and best of all, they can make these products usually by making a quick trip to the grocery store or organic market!! <--- Now that's what I'm talking about!! : )
So I decided to start off simple and make some of my own hair care products. I decided to try and make a moisturizing cream (to be used for styling, moisturizing throughout the day) and a moisturizing hair perfume. I started with these two because I’ve noticed that now that I’m all natural, my hair seems to be a never ending pit when it comes to soaking up moisture. It tends to get dry pretty quickly. I’ve been using my products for a couple days and already I can feel a difference! Yay!
Just in case anyone is interested, I’ve listed the recipe for my two products below. I also made a vid on youtube (
click here) that shows the products I’m using. If any of you try this out (even with
modifications), I would love to know how it worked for you! : )
Ms. Mae’s Shea Butter-Coconut Oil Moisturizing Creme
You’ll Need:
- 100% unrefined shea butter (Purchased mine from Whole Food’s Market) [Note: Mine was modified to include lemongrass essential oil -smells lovely!!]
- Organic Coconut Oil – Refined For Medium High Heat (Purchased from Whole Food’s Market)
- Various moisturizing oils ( jojoba oil, virgin olive oil, tea tree oil, etc.) (Whole Food’s Market)
- Small plastic jar (Sally’s Beauty Supply carries various sizes)
1. The coconut oil comes in a solid form, so it has to be melted down before use. You can place the coconut oil in a plastic container and then place the container in a hot water bath.
2. I used about twice as much coconut oil as the shea butter and after adding the shea butter, microwaved my mixture for about 25 seconds.
3. After melting, I added my oils (~10-12 drops each) and stirred.
4. Once everything was mixed, I let the mixture harden again by placing the container in the fridge for about 2 hrs.
* My mixture had a great consistency and has even been good for providing a little sheen (due to the coconut oil)
Ms. Mae’s Moisturizing Hair Perfume
You’ll Need:
- rosewater and glycerin (by Heritage Products -Whole Food’s Market)
- Various moisturizing oils ( jojoba oil, virgin olive oil, tea tree oil, etc.) (Whole Food’s Market)
- Spritz bottle (local beauty supply store)
1. The rosewater and glycerin was the base, so I filled my bottle mostly with this first.
2. I then added various amounts of my oils to the mixture and made sure to shake the bottle to ensure that everything was mixed sufficiently.
* I love my spritz! I use it in the morning after styling and before bed just so my hair is always moisturized. It really does smell great too : ) I think the next time I make it, I may add some vanilla and peppermint oil too! (Those oils are expensive though! sheesh! lol)
Have any of you come up with your own concoctions yet? If so, feel free to share with the rest of us!! : )

Thanks! Glad you were able to check it out : )
I have made this maixture myself (shea butter, castor oil, and castor oil). I love the creaminess and my hair is super soft and supple afterwards. Have you tried shea loe (shea butter and aloe)?
Cool! I haven't tried that, but I certainly will soon!! Thanks for sharing : )
it seems like the more natural i get, the more i tend to gravitate towards natural products.
a GREAT natural conditioner is trader joe's noursh spa (i plan to review it soon on my blog).
and etsy.com has TONS of handmade products for pretty reasonable prices! lots of sellers also have samples, if you want to try the product out first. i love it there.
I got best beauty products from Sally Beauty… Those are my favorite and beautiful…
A few comments: LOVE LOVE LOVE the site and vids… the first time I saw u on youtube I thought "she is super sweet!!" Your information has indeed been helpful.
I did the BC about a month ago (I actually don't remember the date). Prior to cutting, my hair was natural and to my shoulders,…. I just felt like cutting it one night.Oh the shock on peoples' faces when I went to work the next morning… lol.. they all wanted to know if I had been going "through" something… LOL. I stopped relaxers years ago because (1) its a chemical and (2) my hair REMAINED curly after the relaxer. So I decided to listen to my hair.
This is actually my 3rd BC… but this time I'm really not going to cut it anymore (I'm addicted to the scissors not chemicals lol). Since I always wore it straight, I'm excited to see my puff – I have no idea what to expect. My combo hair texture is different from anything I've seen or googled. Most of my hair is 3c but my hair at the top is 3a, which I have dubbed chicken feathers, because they don't lay down or curl w/out heat or scarf…. until today.
That long rant leads me to the products… I mixed aloe with shea butter and applied it just to my chicken feathers poof… they're gone… even through my workout I still have curls!! I also use a mix of olive and coconut oil with my leave in conditioner. Patchouli and lavender are my FAV essential oils because of their calming qualities.
{sorry for taking up the space}
I had black hair and I decided I did not want to be black anymore, so I decided to change my hair color. The black wouldn’t lift so I had to bleach it then dye it, once that was done I realized that my hair state was one of relaxed hair. Now my twist are thin, they are not as full as they used to be. Plus I started to use Garnier Fructice shampoo and conditioner. I was using natural products by loc life, but my hair would be so tangled. I like the fact of not having to fuss with my hair when washing but miss the thickness of my hair. Should I start back using the natural products to see if the thickness will return and dye my hair warm brown without highlights?
