Thanks for everything. :)

  69. Msstylist says:

I just wanted to say, after watching you videos, I did my Big CHOP on Aug 27th, I haven't gone out in my Afro because I need it to be just a little bit large with my face shape. You know everyone's TWA really looks T.W. on certain face shapes. You encourage me to do the cut and even to start my own blog. I am not video but I am going to start that this week on Fashion Highlights and things I like that are trendy. So keep allowing God to use you. I enjoy the bass playing. I am learning my own bass too but I am a fashion merchandising student. God Bless YOU Ms. Mae!!! Words of encouragement: We all have trials and test but be faithful in him. Don't allow the world to steal your JOY!

  87. Gabrielle says:

Hey Mae! You may not know me, but you probably know my sister (Erinn Ruff). I just wanted to say congratulations on your blog and your new position as part of the naturallycurly.com family. I consider myself to be something of a natural hair blog connoisseur (:D) and your site is fantastic and inspirational. I BC'd in June '07 but since there is still so much that I feel I am learning throughout this process, blogs such as yours are a welcome source of knowledge. I must say that it is somewhat of a surreal experience for me to watch your vids because I remember seeing you and your sisters as young children on Sabbaths at the OC church (I was at OC from 99-2003 and your dad was the assistant pastor for most of that time. Wow I feel old!:) You and your sisters have grown into lovely women and I encourage you to continue to acknowledge the Lord (as you have been) in all that you do. Your hair is fabulous. Keep up the great work.

    Hello Mae!
I am one of your subbies. I finally joined your follower list. Nice blog! I wish I had seen the video about the Mrs. Jessie crew coming to Austin before the date it took place. I live about an hour away from Austin and would have loved to be there. Oh, well! Anyways, great blog. Stay sweet and continue to be blessed.

  102. Lids says:

    Hello Mae :)
By chance I found your videos a month ago: you are a real inspiration!
Thanks to you i left behind my cowardy and I decided to become natural :) it have been a month ago without ironing or blow-drying my hair, and I'm looking for new ways of stylishing it whit no heat or chemicals products. I'm not brave enough to take the decision to do the BC, but still want to take care of my hair, keep it healthy, strong and wear my curls proudly no matter what people say.
It's a bit difficult here where I live because not many women take this decision and have straight hair seems to be the socially correct way … also there is no conventions or group of women who gather proud of their natural hair there.
I regret to say I do not know my real hair, after many years of relaxing and i don't know how to style it yet, but I will learn … I already took the first step in the decision of being natural, bought a lot of organic hair products free of additives such as isopropyl alcohol or benzenes (they are amazing!) and also started to search for information about how to take care of my hair during the transition.
I still feel a bit insecure but with patience it will give good results.
Wish me luck on my hair journey!
    Lids, from Panamá

  103. Futuristic Green Designer says:

Hey Mae, I have been natural since 2002, I had wanted to got natural since 2000, but I guess I was scared of what others would think of me or be rejected. Well it's 2010 and at first, yes people did reject me (especially women) I was like shocked at first because they could not understand why. But the Men, Loved it! I was wearing a straight-up afro back then. I used to go the Barber Shop to get it trimmed. Now, I have evolved and tried various hairstyles that's to YouTube and other outlets. I look forward to read your blog.

Thank you Mae for this outlet for so many women (especially internationally) who have decided to go natural. You are definitely starting a trend and are a great example for those who may have thought they were in the minority when it comes to social acceptance with something so controversial as our own hair. You are definitely showing the power of one.

this is so awesome ive been perm free for 8 years and I love it plus I feel healther from pain in my head that last for 3 weeks after a perm. none of my friends think they can do it.

  113. justkriss says:

I have been following you on youtube and now this site for about 3 weeks. On June9, 2010, I made the HUGE decision to cut off my hair and go natural. This was after weeks of deliberating and having so many people in my life sound in on the decision. Most of the feedback was positive…some was more negative. Regardless, I had no idea how I would feel after I did it.

I have to say with 100% honesty, that I am VERY happy that I made the decision. I will say in addition however, that cutting off my relaxed hair after only growing it out for a little over a month was the most EMOTIONAL thing that I have ever done. Your blog encouraged me to see my TRUE NATURAL beauty and to not be wrapped up in sterotypical images nor self inflicted images of beauty. When I watched your big chop, I almost cried. I knew that it was my time and turn.

I have only been natural for a week now, and I overall feel great. There are FOR SURE moments when I look in the mirror and don't feel as beautiful as before. Times when I feel like a boy and even wish that I just had more length. But I am SO encouraged by your journey and learning that I have got to start feeling comfortable in my own skin…with or w/o relaxed hair. I am finally seeing my eyes, my cheek bones, the sparkle that is in my appearance. I'm finally learning that I have to walk with my head up. To be a proud black woman with proud black coils.

Thank you for documenting your journey. You have no idea how much you have been a blessing to me and I truly thank God for your diligence. I pray that this never becomes a burden, but that instead out of your passion that you would feel encouraged to bless others with the information and knowledge that you share.

    God Bless…JustKriss

Yesterday I made the Big Chop. After getting my relaxed hair cut off, I came home and tried the Mizani True Textures Shampoo, Conditioner, and Curl Moisture Stretch. I'm not really sure how well it worked because I really can not compare it to any other product yet, but I was disappointed in how dry my hair felt after 3-5 hours. Has anyone ever used Kinky Curly Curl Custard and how do you like it? What other products do you recommend as far as shampoo, conditioner, daily mosturizing, etc?

HOLA MAE!! darlin I’m a a fan!! Girl let me tell youu..omgee. My older sister got hooked on your transitions because she was tired of her old damaged relaxed hair..soooooo she did the big chop. I on the other hand am doing the long transition (which is annoying). I haven’t done the chop because I don’t feel it’ll look good on me because I’m so use to blow drying it. Every time I watch your videos I’m convinced to do the big chop but all my friends tell me not to do it because it won’t look good on me. So you need to understand my struggle. I only added pain to my tragedy by getting bangs, so darling..my nose looks bigger. I just want to say though, that my sisters hair looks fabulous thanks to You Tube videos including yours. But a Puerto-Rican, Dominican diva like me, needs your honest suggestions on what the heck to do with her hair. Thanks =)

  144. Hello Natural Chica! I read your story in the New York Times and it is wonderful what your bringing to the table about natural hair. I’ve been a hair stylist for 16 years and I’m always concern about my clients hair. I’m also the inventor of a natural hair product myself, you might of heard of it. It’s called, “HAIR KRACK”.
You heard about it in the movie “Beauty Shop” starring Queen Latifah and in Chris Rock’s Documentary “Good Hair”. Now introducing the natural hair product everyone has been waiting for. Just a little info about “Hair Krack”, International. We are based out of Brooklyn, New York, and have been in business 1 year.

Our objective is to give a natural base product to consumers who are suffering from massive hair loss or damaged hair by using products diluted with other ingredients which take away from their natural base element to promote healthier hair, instantly. Through the consistent use of “HAIR KRACK” our consumers will maintain healthier hair. Restoring and revitalizing hair follicles through consistent usage.
Hair Krack curbs excessive hair loss by reducing Seborrhea (excessive oil secreted by hair glands) renewing hair follicles, creating healthier and thicker hair, revitalizes and prevents breakage, strength the roots, prevents itch and dry scalp.

Hair Krack is a natural based product which contains some of nature’s prolific hair stimulates it has hydrating and healing properties. These are the vitamins which it contains: Vitamins A, C, D, E, B1, B2, B6, F, B complex, Glycol proteins. We have been developing the product and line for the last 2 years. Our products are different first and foremost because they balance out everyone’s hair and scalp naturally depending on what the hair and scalp are missing.

My hair grows really fast so I'm already seeing curls, they are tiny but strong curls. I'm loving it thus far..send me tips at jazzi_214@yahoo.com thanks!

Hi! You have been SO HELPFUL and INFORMATIVE to me while I’m on this natural hair journey! Your videos are a real Godsend for me and I’m telling a lot of my natural buddies about this site and your videos. (The music and your upbeat and positive attitude is a plus also!)
Keep up the the great work and I really appreciate all you do!! Kudos!! ; )

Hi. I saw the article in the NY Times last week and I have to say it came at the right time. My 12 year old just went natural 2 weeks ago (I’m not there yet…) and I had no clue what to do with her hair. Your website and YouTube videos are a Godsend. We will definately be checking in regularly. Keep up the good work!!

    Hi Mae,
All I can say is WOW! I’m so impressed with all of your youtube videos and it has really restored my faith in the decision to go natural. I tried it for about 2 yrs and didn’t stick with it. Now I’m a slave to wigs and braids again. Please help me stay on the right track. I absolutely loved the freedom of fluffing and go my natural style gave me. God was I a fool to go back to the relaxer. I’m so over it now. This time I’m never going back.

    Thanks so much

  175. Hey Mae you are truly wonderful, Love your site. I have a Natural hair blog, please check it out.

    Hi Natural Chica,
I just want to say Thank you for all you do in the natural hair world and out. I started my journey a yr and 3months ago. I had some rough times, but I watched your blogs and your journey and it inspired me to continue. It means a lot to me to be natural because I have a 7yr daughter who doesn’t have a perm (never) and looks at the other kids and wants hair like theirs (straight). So it was important to me to make this transition so that she can see that beauty lies within a person and not their hair. Thank you for your recent online prayer request. That is a wonderful thing you’re doing as a fellow women of God. Thank you!!!

  177. Hello Mae,

Love the site! Your hair is still looking super gorgeous! I cant wait until my 1 year milestone! Visit my site at :www.girlswithkinksandcurls.com

I have really been enoying watching you videos and reading your blogs. I have been relaxer free for a year. I never did the big chop but my processed end are getting smaller. My best friend just began her journey maybe around the begining of the year and she finally decided to do the big chop. We are on this journey together and you are a great help

    Thanks

    Hey Mae!
I’ve been a YouTube follower of yours much longer than I’ve been up to date on your blog, but I am doing an honors thesis project (I’m in my final year at Northwestern University) on the Natural Hair movement as a case study for what I call “diaspora identity” I’d love to send you information about it, as it’s in the works (as is my upcoming blog, which I’ll share once it’s ready) but I was wondering if you knew anything about the “history” of the Natural hair movement, or anyone who did, it’s seeming like I might just write one myself, but I thought I’d ask since you always have such good info!

    Thanks,
    Myrtie

A big Wow and Oh my goodness!!! I have absolutely feel in love with your personality, your youtube channel, naturalchica.com and other sites you have mentioned. Thank you so much for starting all of this and sharing so much with all of us. I became an instant fan. I needed a place that I could get advice and you have helped me so much! I’m so excited! Thanks again Mae!!!!

To have as many gifts/talents as you do and be able to share them with the world freely is endeed a blessing. My job takes me all over the world and I’m restricted to a minimal amount of liquids and gels… discouraging (to the care of my newly, natural hair). I’ve run into some awesome Youtubbers that can lift my spirits about my hair, but you my friend, are an ANGEL. I can not express the encouragement that you’ve given me. Thank you so much and continue to place God first.
