To Color or NOT To Color Natural Hair…What Think Ye??

I have a confession…

I have been going back and forth on the idea of coloring my hair. Truthfully, the only thing that is holding me back is the fear that if I color my hair, its going to weaken it and destroy all the hard work that I have put into maintaining a healthy head of hair so far.

However…I KNOW and have SEEN other natural hair ladies that do have colored hair, and seem to be keeping it in a good, healthy condition. I have also come across some natural, henna-based coloring kits in Whole Foods, but I really have no idea how they have worked for people.

SO…I’m enlisting your help in making my decision : ) In the right sidebar, you will find a poll. All you have to do is vote for whether I should or shouldn’t color. It would also be helpful if those of who you have colored your hair, could provide tips in the comments section on what your experience has been, what products you have used to color, etc.

Thanks chicas and I look forward to getting some hair advice from YOU!

P.S. Visit Naturallynana’s FOTKI, for an idea of the color I would be shooting for. Her hair is beautiful!. She was featured on CurlyNikki today.

i think you should give it a try BUT do alot of research 1st and be sure you are doing it because you want to. I've been coloring since the week of my BC. I use Textures & Tones Silken Black, about every 4 or 5 months. I LOVE it because my hair is naturally a dirty brown & it makes my hair shine & look healthy. After my hair grows longer, ill probably do highlights but for now this works for me!

Try experimenting color sprays! They come in all different colors…from bright neons to natural hair colors…and they wash off as soon you wet your hair! They're also very fun and you won't have to worry about it damaging your hair!!

  3. Angela says:

Go for Henna. You will never go back.

I am a Henna user (light-medium brown base color) and my hair has never looked this glorious. On light to medium brown you get a wonderful red to auburn shade and on dark hair you get a glowing highlight that really GLOWS in sunlight.

For a deeper tone or less red you can do a Henna-Indigo combination. Indigo is used in varying degrees for everything from a deep auburn – to burgundy – all the way to blue black.

It is kind of messy, and takes a bit more time but your hair will be glossy and strong. Henna improves on the strength and smoothness of the hair shaft. Indigo is a natural plant stain.

Together they produce a long lasting glossy color with none of the damage of commercial color.

    I say GO for it.

PS – Go to http://www.hennaforhair.com for all the details and to get quality henna and indigo.
Don't buy drug store versions, they can contain additives than can result in bad color results (ie: the henna horror stories from the 70's were from drug store products, not REAL Henna).
Have fun and post pics !

The VERY SAME article made me want to color my hair too! It's so super fab. *sigh* Im scared to go light though. I did it all the time with my relaxed hair, but now that im natural im quite a bit more cautious!
Above, HisDaughter mentioned Textures and Tones, which is what I used all the time when I was relaxed, and it was pretty gentle, and came with a fabulous conditioner in the box, so it's the only brand I can recommend!
(I'll probably be talking myself into doing now that I wasnt alone in drooling over her hair, lol!)

  5. Ms. Harmony says:

You can try henna and it seems so many naturals swear by it. Check out curlyniki on all the info you need on henna. Good luck!

  6. Alana says:

one word: henna! try that first

  7. Louella Belle says:

If you're going to color anything, go for Henna. It's the best thing for your hair.
However, although you've seen women with colored natural hair who seems to be keeping it up, it much more work than keeping up untreated natural hair. I know for a fact that after 2years and a huge afro and then a coloring, Z of Leave In The Kinks had to cut hers because she realized that taking care of colored hair was alot of work and that her hair was beginning to suffer.

  8. Bri says:

When I just went natural I had my hair twisted and dyed black(er) with henna. My loxologist assured me it was totally safe and it was, my hair looked so healthy and was so healthy…
I don't know how it'd work for colours outside of black though.

  9. Aeleise says:

Color it! I am a hair stylist so my take on color is different. If you don't want to ever lighten your hair henna is good option, just make sure that the one you get doesn't have metallic salts. If you want to have some versatility to change color lighten, darken, and highlight I would seek out a professional that is knowledgeable about hair color on natural hair to at least do a consultation, if not the whole service. There are more natural professional hair colors like Pravana, Aveda, and Organic Color Systems if you're worried about toxic chemicals.

    Hi Mae,

I must say I love your videos. I BC'd a month and a half ago and I am thinking about color (deep red) as well. I'm going to start with Cassia this weekend which is semipermenant and just conditions and strengthens. Light Mountain Natural has some Cassia based kits that color as well. Here are some links

  11. ANGELINA says:

I colored my hair when I big chopped and I have to admit that my dyed hair is drier and not as healthy as my new growth. The damage is so evident I'm going to do another big chop to cut off my dyed ends. For the record, I had my hair dyed in a salon with traditional dye and did not try henna or cassia treatments…I'm sure they aren't as harsh on your hair.

  12. Alana says:

I am afraid to color because I think that my hair will get brittle! I might do it sometime in the future though

  13. Robin says:

I have a unique situation …I am a transitioner as well as gray-silvered haired. As I started my transitioning , I really did not like the gray hair in its curly state…My hair always look great in straight styles as the silver would be highlighted throughout . I would get compliments regularly…however in its curly state , I can admit I really did not like it so I had to find a way to color my hair and keep it healthy in its transitioning state…the answer!!! Light Mountain ..henna , color application in black. Yes it is a long process…I asked my stylist to apply it for me ..and although a little hesitant she did it , because she also knew it would take a long time for the process. I loved the result and am looking forward to doing it again . I would like to wait appx 8-12 weeks for another appication if I can hold out . Since I have been transitioning , my hair is much more healthy and has been growing consitently …for this I am ver happy ..but of course that means I have these beautiful silver hairs popping up all over ..family trait …but .. I love the color . One note …the slightly reddish highlights will show more on the parts or sections of the hair that were the most gray/ or silver…I have a few reddish areas throughout my hair , but I can say that the coverage was sufficient …and it is all nautral . You can purchase on line or as I purched in your local Whole food store. The henna application did indeed make my hair softer, shinier, and healthier. No peroxide based color for me ever!!!!

Where can you find Henna coloring? I am 3 months natural and I really want to color my hair, but like most people, I do not want dry hair or breakage. I purchased HiRez coloring from the beauty supply store, but I have been too chicken to put it in. Since all this talk about Henna coloring, I am intrigued as to how well it will work for my hair. Where is this coloring avaliable and how long is the process?
