Chris-Tia is from Chicago.
I am blessed to have received an autographed copy for my birthday and I read it cover to cover in a few hours. This was a treasured gift and a quick easy read. I was unemployed and was nervous about interviewing with natural hair. Chis-Tai states that your hair is only an issue if you make it an issue. She helped boost my confidence is just being myself and not worrying about my hair (or what others might think of it).
Ludny C.

Gives some great advice about natural hair:
“you have to let go of your standards of neatness. Let go of what you think is neat and roll with it.”
This makes so much sense because it adds to how having natural hair is liberating.

I learned, according to Chris-Tia, that we African Americans MAKE our hair an issue and as long as we keep the rest of our appearance together, no one will think otherwise. Besides, in the end, natural hair is more comfortable than wigs and perms!!
I'm not entering the contest because I have the book and the tee (My awesome sis gave it to me for Christmas), but I had to comment on this post!
Chris-Tia is from my hometown Detroit, MI and her book is absolutely amazing! It is a must read for transitioners like myself. I learned so much!!!

One thing I learned about Chris Tia was that she went natural for the same reasons I did lol. She was inspired to go natural because of time and money. Also she stated she had a healthy obsession with relaxed hair. I think she wanted to grow her hair long with the relaxed hair but realized it didn't make sense to "spend money and time on something so temporary"
Cashmere Clark
CashmereClark@aol.com
I have learned that Chris Tia found beauty in her own hair. Through fate she found it usless to spend money on something that would only last a month or so when in reality she had natural hair that would last her a life time. She began to accept and be more comfortable in her skin because the hair on her head was All hers and not tampered with. By exposing her natural hair she was able to create a book that I have yet to read. I am newly natural and 16 I would love words of wisdom from someone like Chris Tia.

Ashlee Haggard

It is very apparent that Chris-Tia is a very grounded woman. She is not defined by her hair, as she is successful, realistic, and aware. Realizing that "we" make our hair an issue brings about an outlook that allows her (and myself) to exude confidence in whatever she does. Our hair is not about what others think or feel, but about the reality of and vision we have for ourselves.
I knew of this book and the author, and have heard a lot about it. The only thing I didn't recall that I learned from the bio is that her book was declared the Natural Hair Bible by Essence magazine. They don't show a lot of love to natural hair styles so I guess I missed that one.

From reading her bio, this quote stood out to me: "It had to be money and time. Wearing my relaxed hair had become a healthy obsession. It didn’t make sense to me to spend that much money and time on something so TEMPORARY." The later struck me because its true. We place so much emphasis on something so temporary when it is God has blessed us with beautiful, thick, strong, and curly hair….Something that would always be there without the use of mundane things. That statement just solidified why I am a natural.

~One thing I learned from this Chicago native is that to gain acceptance of my natural hair in the workplace is to show that I am confident in myself & to not make it an issue. Once i thought about what she said regarding acceptance in Corporate America, I realized that I was the only person who even considered that my coils may be an issue. No more! I can say it loud! "I'm coily & I'm proud!"

She explained on how her father didn't embraced her natural journey in the beginning; however in the end , after seeing her wonderful results he feel in love with the idea.
I have been transistioning my hair for about seven months now, and a lot of my friends question why I am making this commitment. And some even say that they prefer me with straightened hair best.

*I've learned that Chris-Tia's family did not accept her natural hair, and I am currently going through that situation except its with my mommy. My mother criticizes my curls because they are tighter than my sister's and wants me to perm my curls. It's very frustrating because we are so close, and I want to be able to confirm her support. Chris-tia made the decision to go natural back in 2002 before it was considered the ‘in’ thing to do and there were very few resources around for women interested in embracing their own natural mane. Her interest and dedication began with her own personal journey of self-realization and transformation which evolved into a book, and now, a blog, where she can not only assist others in their journey to natural…but also participate in open discussion with others who are going through the same experience.

Chris-Tia is a native Chicagoian, a lawyer, and an advocate for African Americans to learn how to deal with their natural hair. She wrote "Thank God I’m Natural" to help rid us of thinking the way we do and get rid of the misconceptions about our hair. And she thought like I thought that black women couldn’t wear their hair in its natural state, because we didn't look like some of the celebrities of today that have beautiful naturally curly hair. When she came to the realization that she could go natural, be her natural self, she wanted to share all the information she has come to learn about caring for her hair with us. Chris-Tia has become a successful motivator for me. I too work in a the legal community as a court reporter. I thought it was inappropriate to where my hair natural, but after reading her book and YouTube, I have changed my foolish thinking. Hey, now I'll rock a mean fro in a heartbeat on Friday. LOL!!

– One thing you’ve learned about Chris-Tia from reading her BIO: she's helpful, friendly and open to helping others (hence, the creation of her book). What really stood out to me is that she feels as though it's God's blessings and divine intervention that lead her to write her first book.

I learned that Chris-Tia started her law career wearing wigs because she was afraid to rock her natural hair in such a conservative setting.
She is so brave and bold now; it's nice to know that that kind of confidence will come eventually!
Thanks for the opportunity ;0)

I learned that being natural shouldnt be much of an issue. If you as an individual can rock your natural hair without doubt or hesitation, people will learn to accept it too.

One thing you’ve learned about Chris-Tia from reading her BIO: What I've learned is that Chris-Tia is a very well rounded person. From what I have read it appears that she has done extensive research on what women need to know to take care of natural hair and dispelling the myths about our hair to the masses.

I learned that during college Chris-Tia wore wigs for a couple years before wearing her hair in its "natural" state. After an eye-opening experience of her wig catching fire while cooking. Also how she evolved from such a self-conscious person regarding her natural hair into a very confident woman who openly shares her experiences and knowledge about natural hair.

- Chris-Tia said black hair in the work place becomes an issue when we make it an issue. As long as it looks good, no one will say anything. It is much easier for her to rock her natural hair than to wear wigs and other styles
~~ this is a good point! It's more distracting when our hair goes from long to short, black to reddish-brown in a matter of hours. Then people start raising their brows and asking questions.
I can't wait to read this book!

What I have learned from reading Chris-Tia's bio are the following: Natural hair has a lot to do with being comfortable with yourself. You have to mentally take yourself out of the comfort zone that many black women in the U.S. have put themselves in for quite sometime and happily embrace your inner and natural beauty. It's a beauty that is appreciated by many people, which I'm beginning to realize with my journey.

Chris-Tia Wrote the book "Thank God I’m Natural" for newbie naturals and for already naturals to look for information and inspiration also when she first started her natural journey her family wasn't very accepting of it and now they really like her hair. She has been natural since 2002, and a reason she went natural is because of all the money and time she spent on wearing her relaxed hair didn't make any since for something so temporary.

From Chris-Tia 's Bio I have learned what God has blessed us with. The freedom of sharing! She took her time and effort to share the wilds of natural hair and compressed it into a book, that she had no idea would be a success. Her knowledge has shown me that as long as you accept your hair, you should be happy no matter what your family may say! =)

One thing I learned from Chris-Tia's BIO: I learned that black professional woman should be comfortable stepping outside the box. If we think we look good, then other will care less about your hair. Rock it! But if it's written on your face that you're unsure of the way you look others will read it and in turn make you second guess yourself and decision.
*I love this because that was my fear in going natural because I work in a office setting. And natural hair is something you just dont see often. Gotta get this book!! Thx Mae*

one thing I learned from her Bio is that like me she was the only black girl in her class…exept that I still am…lol. I also learned that it's perfectly fine to be that different person, because others learn from you and if life were a T.V show, you would be the interesting person to the irl that wants to be natural. One of the things that I learned was that the same reasons she went natural were my same reasons and that is spending so much money and time on something so temporary ends up not being worth it. Why not just love and take care of what God gave me. It just makes sense.

I learned, according to Chris-Tia, that we African Americans MAKE our hair an issue and as long as we keep the rest of our appearance together, no one will think otherwise. Besides, in the end, natural hair is more comfortable than wigs and perms!!
April Walker

I learned that it took Chris-Tia about 3 years to finish the book which I think speaks to the journey and experience that accompanies a head full of natural, healthy hair. I try to learn something new about my curls every day. Whether it's discovering a new coil or curl pattern, realizing just how versatile shea butter is or engaging in the online natural hair community. There is definitelty something spiritual about hair so I was glad to read that Ms. Chris-Tia credits God with leading her to write the book.

'If you make it an issue, other people would make it an issue' From Chris-Tia I learned that Natural hair is what YOU make of it. If you see your hair as beautiful and carry it with pride, that's the exact image people would see and vice versa!

She is amazing.. Your natural hair is what you make of it.. Just be yourself and don't waste money on relaxers and perms.. They are clearly just a Temporary fix which in the end is not good for you.

Chris-Tia was quoted saying that you have to let go of your standards and neatness. This is exactly what I've been dealing with lately. Trying to abandon the idea of NEAT hairstyles….believing that a polish look requires all hairs to be in places. But as Chris-Tia states you have to let that go when your natural! For one it's not possible to perfect every hair and two….the beauty of natural hair is it's free structure : ))

I learned from the bio that we share one of the same reasons for going natural, and that is that, "It had to be money and time. Wearing my relaxed hair had become a healthy obsession. It didn’t make sense to me to spend that much money and time on something so temporary." Thus one of the ultimate factors in my decision to go natural and a common opinion.

I learned that Chris-Tia's a down to earth lady who is really open to helping others. She also tells it like it is when she says that a lot of the time we as African Americans are the ones that make our hair an issue and that is so true. Most people who had negative things to say were African Americans but once they saw the confidence I found it started to cchange some of their misconceptions on things. Chris-Tia seems to be a lovely lady, successful too.

Question: Funny or not so funny? It looks like Chris-Tia battled ignorant comments from those closest to her. I BC'd two weeks ago and I've heard everything from…"Fantastic" to "What did you do?". Ladies, at 34 years old I could care less what others define me as what's important is how this CHICA sees herself. I was worried when I walked into my office setting after my BC. "What would my co-workers think about my natural hair?" Would they think that it is not professional? I was glad to know that I wasn't the only one. Chris-Tia talks about her experience with natural hair in corporate America. I too had the same reaction from my co-workers… they ask me questions all the time and compliment me on my hairstyles. I have learned that "halthy hair IS good hair" and that it all has a place in the grand scheme of things!
