“Black Don’t Crack!” by Rachel Odem, Licensed Beauty Expert

“BLACK DON’T CRACK”

by Rachel Odem, Licensed Beauty Expert

Have you ever heard the statement Black Don’t Crack? Mostly when people say this, they are referring to black skin and how it seems to age at a slower pace than people of other races. This is partly true due to the fact of blacks having more melanin.  Melanin helps to protect the skin from UV rays.  This brings me to an important skin care myth amongst the black community, because we do have increased melanin. Many blacks do not believe they need to wear sunscreen. While the increased amount of melanin in the skin will help to protect from the sun, in today’s environment the risk of skin cancer is a very real risk when you go without any sun protection. Also 80 to 85% of aging is caused by the rays of the sun. I love seeing a woman of color whose real age is closer to 60 but her skin looks the age of  a 30 year old. I take the risk of sun damage very seriously and so should you. Here are some thing you can use to protect your skin from the sun.

1) If you prefer a natural look, try a tinted moisturizer. As a busy mom this is one of my favorite products to use but it has the multiple uses of sun protection and daily moisturizer. On the high end of the price range I recommend Bobbi Brown Extra Moisturizer (SPF 25), on a lower end budget I like Black Opal Resurfacing Moisturizer (SPF 15).

2) Stay away from the sun during peak hours. This is usually between 10am and 3pm.

3) When shopping for sunscreen products, be sure to look for a SPF minimum of 15.

4) Wearing a foundation will help to provide an extra layer of protection. Look for products like mineral powders that contain titanium dioxide.

5) Don’t forget children under the age of six months should avoid being exposed to the sun. Obviously this is next to near impossible for some, so please just do your best to give babies a hat and some type of protective clothing.

Trip to the Atlanta Zoo with my American Express Prepaid Card!

So my journey with the new American Express Prepaid Card continues! …

I LOVE animals and have been watching countless features on National Geographic recently when I decided..why not visit the lovely creatures living here in my own city : )  Since a preset amount of funds had already transferred from my bank account onto my American Express Prepaid Card , I decided to use the card for my outing!

Paying for my entrance fee was a breeze with my AMEX prepaid card. It was just like handing over my credit card. It was also good to know that I had already set aside funds to use for my trip and I didn’t have to worry about going over budget on my trip. This actually helped when I kept reminding myself to not waste my funds on unnecessary (but oh so tempting) snack food within the zoo, which of course gave me more time to actually enjoy and visit with all the animals there…and save some mulah : )

One thing I’ll note when preloading funds onto the card is that if you are planning to use the card for an outing, make sure to transfer funds at least 3 business days in advance so you can be ready to make moves! I definitely had a positive experience with the American Express Prepaid Card on this outing.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be partnering with Marian Anderson at the upcoming Sam Fine Beauty event as one of the beauty bloggers for the event! I have admired the makeup artistry of Sam Fine for years now, and even purchased his infamous DVD not too long ago (FINE: The Basics of Beauty). Not only is this going to be a great event because of who’s coming, but because of the fact that this event is going to be helping raise money for “Living Water for Girls”. The mission of this organization is “To rescue, rehabilitate and restore commercially sexually exploited girls by providing safe refuge and holistic therapeutic services.”.

You can read more about “Living Water for Girls” HERE.

For each person who buys a ticket to this event, they will be receiving:

  • A makeup class and interactive Q&A with Sam Fine
  • Private reception to meet Sam Fine
  • A copy of Fine: The Basics of Beauty DVD

I know this is going to be a wonderful and educational event supporting a great cause. I look forward to seeing some of you all there! : )
