Welcome to NaturalChica.com!

I started this site in July of 2009, with the original intent of just documenting my own transition from relaxed to natural hair. Since then, the site has blossomed into a place where you can find tips & video tutorials to help with  your own natural hair journey, encouraging interviews with naturalistas from all over, profiles of some of your favorite natural hair companies, and posts dealing with other areas of life that I feel impressed to share with you all :)

The site is constantly evolving, but the main goal is to encourage, inspire, and motivate!

I have been trying to follow on Youtube and Facebook, I really like your tutorials. Please keep doing what your doing and sharing what works, do you use the Huetiful hair steamer?

  2. Veronica Coleman says:

I just discovered you on youtube! I was searching for info on transitioning from perm to natural. I’ve had my hair cut into a bob:) I feel my head is too big for the BC (LOL) I’ve been going faithfully each week to a natural stylist for a flat iron:) How long will it take for a transition without the BC. My last perm was August 21, 2010.

    • Loreal says:

You can transition for as long as you want. Transition until you feel your hair is at a good enough length to cut it off. Moisturizing is always important during transition, but the longer your hair gets the more you have to moisturize because at the point where your natural hair meets your relaxed hair, it is getting weaker. I transitioned for only 6 months before I did my BC. I would have done it sooner, but hey, we all make our own decisions right? I hope this helps you out. Good luck hun!

    • Jocelyn says:

I had my last perm just around the same time; August 2010. I BC’d on the 1st of December and I am rocking my natural hair. I believe 7 months is enough for transitioning because since the meeting point of the relaxed and natural hair gets weaker, it’s better you BC to allow the natural hair to have its way. ( my opinion) lol. Please try to moisturize with water and any butter you have. I used shea butter during my transitioning and it was great. All the best!

    • Catrina Henry says:

Hey Veronica my name is Catrina and I realized that we both decided to go natural on the same date my birthday it’s been a year and almost a month. I am still transitioning!!! Where r u mow in your journey?

  3. Shantavia says:

Hey I’ve been following your videos on youtube and I have noticed you have never done a wash-n-go unless I have missed the video. Have you not done a wash-n-go? I know its cold now so you probably will not now

  4. Rhoda Walker says:

I have been watching your tutorials on YouTube, and I love them all. I have been natural sine June 2010. I am really thinking about doing the BC, but I really wanna wait untill April to see how much growth has occurred. So I am still in my transition stage.

  5. Trish says:

    heeey (:
I live in Germany and it´s so hard to do anything with my hair here!
We don´t have the right products and if I find something it´s realy expensive.
Nearly everyone I know has extentions or relaxed hair. I´ve been natural since 1 year now and i found your youtube channel 2 or 3 weeks ago.
And I´m sooo pleased that i´ve found it!
It´s really hard to do anything with my hair ´cause no one can say me what i can do because they aren´t natural. Now, with your channel i know some different ways to style my hair…instead of an afro.
So i just wanna say thank you so, so much for all your videos.
    I have 2 questions:
How do I know what kind of hair type my hair is?
and what can i do if my hair doesn´t has the same lengh ( up ist really long, and down really short)?

    Mae,
Your website has been very helpful to me. I did the BC on Oct 26, 2010 and love my hair. I follow you on youtube and I’ve learned alot about natural hair from your website and youtube. You and a blessing to the natural hair community!

  8. Niyanna says:

  9. Shawn Jenkins says:

I am going to do the bc on new years eve. This would be my second attempt. I have young daughters and they hate to see me relax my hair and they ask me why I do it if it smells and if it burns. I don’t want them to ever relax theirs so I will provide the example right now of how to take care of your natural hair. I love your youtube videos and will refer to them for inspiration. I live in Germany and there is a few natural black hair salons available for trims etc. Happy New Year and many blessings.

  11. Cheref says:

I want to say that I am so excited! I finally did my BC on New Years Eve. I was so encouraged by your youtube videos that I was brave enough to do it. I have been wanting to go natural since college. I am so happy about the results. I transitioned 8 months with braids, sew-ins and kinky twists. I am loving my hair just the way God made it. Thank you so much for all of the great information. If it wasn’t for your videos I would not have had the courage to finally go natural:) For those of you who are transitioning still just have patience and Nikkimae is right that time does go by fast.

  12. Staci says:

Hello NikkiMae! I just decided yesterday to finally let my relaxed hair grow out, and go NATURAL!! I’ve been juggling this decision since my freshman year in college, and it’s finally time six years later. Your videos on youtube have inspired me, and even though it may be a challenge during my transition, I’m convinced this will be a wonderful journey! Thank you so much!

P.S. I plan to wait and go for my BC in 6-7 months.

  13. Angel says:

    Hi Nikkimae!

I decided to go natural in November 2010 (BC: 11.18.10) and I believe God sent you to be my mentor on this journey. I found you on youtube and haven’t stopped watching since! You truly are an inspiration. I am so excited about this natural journey! God Bless!

  15. V says:

    Mae,

Your journey is an inspiration, and I am grateful that I stumbled upon your Youtube posts about a month ago. Your product reviews and demonstrations are wonderful, and I am thrilled by what you have achieved. You are knowledgeable, thorough, and a joy to watch.

I have been transitioning for the past 6 months, with a 1-year Big Chop date in mind. We’ll see how that goes, because the more I tap into the wonder and support of the Natural-haired community, the more I consider upping that date. I can’t wait to fully experience my natural hair, and I have a growing need for big healthy hair!

Keep up the excellent work, and best of luck.

    All the best,
    V

  16. Renata says:

Hey, Mae! I love your videos, they’re extremely helpful. I have a question though. How long on average do you think it will take my hair to grow say, 3-5 inches? And what protective styles (besides cornrows) can I do on my medium length natural hair/what are the best products to grow your edges back in fast?

    Thanks!

  17. LaShelle says:

Hi Mae, I love you! So inspiring you are. My last relaxer was Nov 2010. I just did my BC two days ago. I’m happy I did it. The relaxed hair kept getting tangled and just weak as the days went on. So for now I’m rockin my twa. :) Keep inspiring Chica!

  18. Annynomus says:

Just did the BC for the third time. I like a fresh look. I usually revert back to a relaxer for a sharp hair cut but this time for travel reasons I think I’m done with relaxers. I feel unequipped. I need to create an arsenal of products that travel with me and make for simple, easy, daily styling. The products I used in the past are discontinued, but you seem to have a good regimen going for you. Where can I stock up on the products you use. Especially that brush/detangler?

  19. AuntyCooky says:

Ok, baby girl! You’ve convinced Aunty to grow my perm out and go natural. I’ve been thinking about it for a while but, I really didn’t feel like going through the process. But, I start this summer with braids and I’ll let it grow out to a certain length and then cut it. I’m so proud of you and this website. I’m glad that your mom told me about it. You have to tell me how you got your hair in that wavy style that you wore at Alumni this year. I saw the pictures and I absolutely love it. Love ya!

  20. Your doing great, keep up the good work. I can’t believe you’ve been around since 2009, and im just finding out about you now!

  21. Jackie says:

I stumbled across this site after a series of clicks. You are now in my favorites. I had been avoiding a perm to GO HARD before my vacation in August, now I’m rethinking those plans. I think I will get braids for the trip then chop as soon as we get home. I can’t wait! I’m looking forward to my mini fro. But I’m also excited to have a head full of hair like your own. For years I’ve tried to grow my hair in an ocean of relaxers, I finally get that abandoning the ocean will get me back to my natural waves.
    Thank you so much.

  22. Shmeka says:

Hey I have been going natural since May 2011 and I am very proud of myself. I am doing weight watchers and losing weight. I have decided that in september before my family goes on vacation I was going to do the big chop. Right now my salonist stated that I already have 2 1/2 inches of new growth. I watched you journery on youtube and is has really inspired me what products do you recommend. I have been using olive oil products and cantu. I wanted to get your opinion

  23. -kiki26 says:

Hello, I have been transitioning and I’m in the same stages as you were in the first video I saw, four months and I was wondering if there were any products you really recommend for transitioners! I have only been using cantu products, nothing more.

  24. Crystal says:

Congratulations on being fully natural for Two Years! I

I have viewed many of your vids and enjoy watching them. I transtioned for 10 months and fully naturally for 2 months now. I should have just done the Big Chop a long time ago but everyone does things in their own time. I am very happy with my hair and its health and growth now that I have been fully natural. I have recieved many tips from you but the one that I use most is making the oils. I love the one with rose water, vegetable glycerin, and essential oils. I use it to twist my hair or just moisturize it. I hope my subscription came through okay; I have never subscribed!

    God Bless,

Natural Chica, I’ve been following you for quite some time and have watched you and your hair blossom….I too am a blogger with a social networking site also. I would like to get my members involved like yours. I see you do product giveaways. I was wondering if there were any tips you could provide. How do you get the sponsors on board to support you cause? How do you keep the members coming back regularly. If you could send me an email, I sure would appreciate it.
