Blogger Naturalista: Maxine

How long have you been natural? And if you haven't been natural your whole life, what prompted you to make the change?
I’ve been ‘mostly’ natural for about five years, but in the first three years I was wearing sew-ins and just relaxing the top of my head (that was left out of the weaves) and leaving the rest alone. It’s been about two years since I stopped wearing weaves and started rocking my natural hair.
Do you feel that anything changed in your life (i.e. Boost in confidence) when you became all natural?
The first time I had my natural hair styled by a hairdresser I was shocked by the texture. It was so much nicer than I ever imagined. Since then it’s been a HUGE adjustment for me to wear my hair in its naturally curly state, but when I do I definitely feel a little different…not so much a boost in confidence, but I feel more unique, more individual; like more of an interesting person.
When and why did you start your blog?
I’ve been blogging for a long time now – probably as long as there have been blogs lol – so I have a few. I’ve love telling stories and I’ve always had a diary, so blogging for me was a natural progression because it’s a combination of the two.
What types of topics do you post on your blog?
Well technically I have three blogs – ‘and then he never called me’ which is all funny stories of bad dates I’ve been on where the dude never called me again. ‘will it work for me’ is my beauty blog where I take hair & makeup products that weren’t necessarily designed for black people and see if they’ll work for me, and ‘the adventures of max fabulous ’ which started out as just a chronicle of my day-to-day experiences and has turned into a relationship blog. That’s the only one I write in anymore.
What do you love most about blogging?
I love when my blog posts become a conversation; I love throwing my opinions out there and having people weigh in. My goal with ‘max fabulous’ is to make people think and to help men & women understand each other.  When I feel like I’ve done that I get excited.

How would you describe your hair?
LOL when I’m frustrated I usually describe my hair as ‘my dougla curse’ (dougla traditionally refers to a person who is mixed with black and Indian, which I am). It does not want to be straight no matter what and of course all I want is bone straight hair that just hangs down like a curtain. Ultimately though I know I’m lucky to have hair that curls up nicely but also can be straight – in the right weather conditions – without chemicals. So I guess how I would describe my hair is ‘beautifully versatile’.
What are 5 products your hair can't live without?
Coconut oil
Shea Butter
Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Leave-in
Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide Serum
Mixed Chicks Leave in Conditioner

What words would you leave with someone who is thinking about going natural?
Do it! I think everyone should have the experience of being natural at least once. I don’t judge anyone who chooses not to remain natural, but I think we all have to know that we can rock our hair in its natural state and feel beautiful.
Do you have any other electronic means that we can use to keep up with your natural journey? (i.e. Fotki)
I have a fotki but I never keep it up.

Thanks Maxine!
