Dealing with Natural Hair in the 80’s (THROWBACK POST)

[Originally posted 9/6/09]

I was looking for some inspiration for natural hair styles from the 80's and I came across this article in the NY Times published on August 3, 1986. Apparently the increased interest in natural hair among black women comes in "waves"! More than 20 yrs later, we still are addressing some of the same issues in the natural hair community! Take a look at an excerpt here:

"FOR the black women who wore them in the tumultuous 1960's, large Afros symbolized black pride and a refusal to endure the arduous processes of chemically or thermally straightening their hair.

Though black men continued wearing more closely cropped natural cuts, by the mid-70's black women virtually abandoned the Afro style, deemed too radical by some and passe by others.
While straight or curly permed hair remain the most popular styles, a small but growing number of black women are ''going natural'' again -wearing round helmetlike cuts that look like updated versions of the Afro."
