Creating a Successful Business from Scratch – Naturally

When I made the decision to embrace my natural hair back in 2009, Miss Jessie's was one of the first natural hair care brands that was introduced to me. There is no question that Miss Jessie's is one of the trailblazers in the natural hair care industry, providing a variety of natural hair care products at a time when most companies weren't paying much attention to the natural hair movement that was rapidly growing. Miss Jessie's, started by sisters Miko and Titi  Branch, was not only influential in my journey to caring for my natural hair texture but also in my blogging journey. I will never forget the note I received from Miko and Titi in the first year that I started blogging, that encouraged me to continue sharing my experience. I was so inspired by their continuous growth over the years and I felt incredibly blessed when I was able to partner with them as a hair model for one of their events and eventually have them as the sponsor for our first annual Naturally Pretty event, helping us to raise funds for the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children. I was so heartbroken when I heard the news of Titi's passing this past December and my prayers continue to go out to her sister and the rest of the Miss Jessie's family.

Miss Jessie's - Creating a Successful Business from Scratch - Naturally is a memoir and business guide rich with inspirational life lessons and unique business advice from Miko Branch, the Chief Executive Officer of the dynamic Miss Jessie’s — the company that revolutionized the hair care industry.Miko recalls that when she and her sister, Titi, were children, their grandmother, Miss Jessie, taught them independence and showed them the value of being “do it yourself” women, all while whipping up homemade hair concoctions at her kitchen table. As co-founders of Miss Jessie's, Miko reveals how she and Titi applied those lessons to create a successful business from scratch.A family memoir with a wealth of practical business advice and handy hair tips, told in Miko's funny and relatable voice, Miss Jessie’s chronicles Miko's remarkable story from her childhood learning independence as a latchkey kid in Jamaica, Queens, to co-founding her remarkable company with her sister in their shared home salon in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Miko reflects on her hard-won insights working for her autocratic, iron-fisted father, and how the self-sufficiency she learned in childhood helped her blossom as a single mother with bills to pay, a child to raise, and a dream to pursue. Miko speaks honestly of her mistakes and successes, and of her role as an industry leader, negotiating multi-million dollar deals while at the same time restoring the self esteem of natural and curly haired women.Miss Jessie's provides an honest look into the life and life lessons of the woman behind the brand.  Miss Jessie's offers invaluable instruction that can be applied to any business, and is equal parts charming and enlightening, chock full of entertaining stories and a personal collection of Miko's family photos.  At its core, Miss Jessie's confirms that with effort the American Dream is possible.

I am incredibly honored to be a part of the official blogger tour that is supporting Miko as she shares their journey in building Miss Jessie's into such a successful business. As a part of this special tour, Miss Jessie's has agreed to sponsor an awesome giveaway prize for one lucky Natural Chica reader!

Awesome giveaway! I would love to try all these products for my fine, dry and frizzy hair. No matter what product i have tried, there is no beating the frizz and it drives me crazy. I really need something that will help tame the frizz and also help seal in moisture.

  1. Miss Jessie’s was also one of the first products I tried when I started to wear my hair natural. I got the curly pudding and curly meringue on the 2 for 1 Christmas special. I’d have to say the meringue is my favorite Miss Jessie’s product, it gives me a nice beautiful hold. I also love the style guide booklets that come with the products.

It’s so awesome that they have a book. Kudos. I’m always scared to try new products since I have a very sensitive scalp. I’ll have to give theirs a go.

I haven’t used any of Miss Jessie products because the area that live in does not have a lot of natural hair products. I heard some great reviews about Miss Jessie’s and I believe this is a fanatic chance to try some of the products. I would really love to try a product that I could use for my twist out and have good definition with my twists. My hair is very thick and kinky the products that I tried haven’t been successful.
